Qualifications and Training
Whilst studying Medicine at the University of Adelaide, Mark was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship. He completed his PhD in genetic eye disease at the University of Oxford and worked at the Oxford Eye Hospital. Then, after five years of ophthalmology training in South Australia, he undertook a further glaucoma surgical fellowship at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne. He is experienced in all aspects of glaucoma surgery, including Trabeculectomy, glaucoma drainage tubes, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). He has a special interest in the surgical repair of traumatic eye injuries: cyclodialysis cleft, iridodialysis, as well as repair of the iris and pupil. He also provides a comprehensive ophthalmology practice, including cataract, retina, pterygium, and repair of lower eyelid entropion and ectropion.
Dr Hassall is an academic surgeon-scientist improving the lives of glaucoma patients through genetic discoveries that individualise and optimise his patients’ care. He has published in Nature Genetics, Ophthalmology and other major scientific journals. He is an Investigator on the SINERGGI multi-centre clinical trial for glaucoma treatment at the Flinders Medical Centre. He has been intimately involved in the development of the world-leading
